NI Assembly Vote today
The NI Assembly is voting today on policing powers to be devolved to them. The Government coalition of the DUP and Sinn Fein have agreed to it but the UUP have so far refused and the last US President George W Bush has had to call David Cameron and ask him to intervene. Why would the UUP oppose this proposal? The reasons are historic and potentially structural with the idea of giving Sinn Fein community access to policing intelligence that could fall into the hands of the Real IRA. The question to ask is: are they being paranoid or do they have real concerns that can be proved prior to the vote as the DUP MLA member said after the Newry bomb blast by the Real IRA that they have been?If one looks at London then the community framework shows how this can operate successfully and without devolution then there is always the risk that Sinn Fein fractures and dissidents occur. This would destabilise the chances of a state visit to Ireland of the Queen reported in last weeks Daily Mail and full reconciliation of the UK and Ireland with the latter joingin the Commonwealth while keeping its president like African states and Pakistan and India at the end of the current Irish Presidents term of office. Do the UUP want to antagonise future conflict and provoke the next Ian Paisley, restarting the troubles or do they want to work with the SDLP to defeat the DUP and Sinn Fein at the ballot box?Lets hope its the latter.
