Lords Reform some thoughts.
Dealing with the prefferendum
OK I'm personally hoping for 80% elected Lords / Senate so that the Faith leaders who currently sit in the Lords can remain as ex officio. Plus if it was elected by Open list STV according to Nation and Region, the old voice of the shires that used to be the 'efficient secret' (Guy, John) of The Commons could be replicated with regional grand cttes that could deal with strategic issues. Plus those elected could be just the MEPS sitting as senators of the realm to whom they swear allegance above the European Union. That would be a marked repatriation of sovereignty and long overdue. After all if the EU is funding everything else in this country, why not our second chamber, lol
I personally see merit in allowing current lifers to be stripped of their voting rights and allowed to speak in debates relevant to their expertise and at cttes for the rest of their lives. as it creates scope for UK and Commonwealth privy councillors to put transparent input into the democratic process, as well members of the UK Supreme Court (rebadged House of Lords Appellate ctte)
hoiowever as reform gets closer the question must be asked, when will we get a written constitution like the rest of the world?
Plus there is the issue as to why the prefferendum was dropped. If that occurred then it would be easier to have a multi choice refferendum on devolution in Wales and Scotland, esp re abolition, status quo, more powers (in the case of the Welsh) and even the I word of Independence.
As someone who has recently joined the English Democrats I must say that methinks the Labour Party could smell that it might lose one of its achievements as constituional rform develops a momentum of its own.
